I am excited to introduce you to our new site and home within the Mercer Island Volunteer Community. There are obviously some changes and some new things to get used to in our new place. This article is intended to serve as a bit of a history of how we got here and an orientation to what we have now.
This current effort builds on the groundwork laid by Don Sandstrom and Dave Cook with the existing mirohams.org site. This site itself was an evolution of the need for time tracking and member roster information. In another step we are moving the site forward with the intent to share and connect as a group and to extend that connection with other Mercer Island Emergency Management Action Council groups. This evolution of our site came from discussions with Woody Howse, Jennifer Franklin, and Mike Kaser (Director of Information and Geographic Services for Mercer Island). This new site is hosted by the city and is part of a managed framework that can be leveraged by groups beyond MIRO.
As part of this introduction we ask that our MIRO members take a few minutes to complete a profile to extend the capabilities of our member roster. In addition to the information we collect today (identity, location, and basic contact information), we are looking to better understand the communications capabilities that we have as a group. Under the graphic at the top of the page you will see a menu of options as in this image.
To orient us all in this new site, we will cover the contents of each of these sections. Regardless of where you are this will bring you will see this same menu across the site. The “Home” will take you to the top level page where you will find recent articles, the calendar of events, the search function, and links for volunteer time tracking. The “Contact” page has some phone numbers for MIRO assets and leadership. The “General Information” page is intended for both MIRO members and our internet guests. This provides information around our organization, our regular communications, and the methods/infrastructure used for that communication. The area “Member Information” is reserved and secured for registered MIRO members only such as procedure documentation. Here you will be challenged for your login/password and you can find our member profile information, both individually and as a group (our roster). The “Password Reset” function uses your MIRO registered email account to allow you to change a forgotten password. The final icon of the magnifying glass allows you a quick link to search across the site.
I would ask all of you to take the time to click on the “Member Information” link and take a few minutes to review the “User Profile” for two reasons; 1. to verify the information we have for you as MIRO member, and 2. to extend your profile with information about you own communication capabilities as part of the MIRO and Mercer Island EMAC community. You will see an icon that looks like a gear that will allow you into the settings to update your profile information.
